Cancarb remains committed to continuous improvement. A major step toward that goal was realized July 25th with the groundbreaking and announcement of the solar power project. 7000 solar panels will provide roughly 3.5 megawatts of renewable electricity to the thermal carbon black plant, complying with both municipal and provincial requirements of being a microgeneration project under 5 MW, strictly for self-supply. Cancarb’s location in Medicine Hat (the sunniest city in Canada, averaging 2,544 hours of sunshine per year) presents an excellent opportunity for solar panel usage.
Notes Peter Donnelly, President of Cancarb Limited, “As a carbon black producer, we are deeply committed to achieving the sustainability goals that have been set out by our parent company, Tokai Carbon Co. Ltd, which are to be carbon neutral by 2050. We are also making this investment for our customers – they want to buy carbon black from companies that are committed to sustainable operations and are willing to take real action to reduce emissions. We already own the land next to the plant, and this is a great way to further reduce our emission footprint.”
The construction contract has been awarded to a local solar development company Terralta Inc., with construction commencing immediately and commissioning expected mid-2026.
