Important Quality Information
Have a question about our Quality and Management Systems?
The Cancarb Management System comprises our certifications to ISO 9001:2015, and ISO 14001:2015, as well as our Certificate of Recognition (COR) for our Occupational Health and Safety program. A copy of our registration certificates is available on our website or upon request.
Cancarb issues a certificate of analysis (CoA) for all shipments. The CoA can be provided via mail, e-mail, fax or sent with a customer’s shipment. Your Cancarb Customer Service Specialist can assist you with this. The standard CoA contains the following information:
- Customer Ship to Details
- Customer Order Number
- Country of Origin
- Customer Product Code
- Product Name
- Manufacture Date
- Packaging Details
- Lot Number
- Quantity
- Information on Tests Performed on the Lot Including:
- Product characteristics (physico-chemical test results)
- Test Procedure Reference and/or Applicable ASTM Guideline
- Specification (min/max)
- Test Result and Pass/Fail Determination
- Recommended Storage Condition Statement
The product shelf life of Cancarb thermal carbon black is indefinite if stored under cover.
However, the integrity of the packaging material should be determined for any product that has been exposed to exterior environments, high levels of moisture or excessive handling.
Customers’ requests for corrective action are addressed by the Quality Department. Responses will be sent to the customer via the respective Marketing Manager.
Test methods for properties listed on Cancarb product specifications are available upon request. Wherever possible, ASTM standards are referenced.
Cancarb is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tokai Carbon Co. Ltd., of Tokyo, Japan. All directors and employees of Cancarb are committed to complying with Tokai Carbon’s Code of Business Conduct, a copy of which can be provided upon request.

Waste Heat Recovery Power Plant
With great power comes a great way of reducing emissions and giving back. The Cancarb power facility captures large volumes of waste heat from the adjacent thermal carbon black operation to produce power for consumers in southern Alberta.
+ Step 1
+ Step 2
+ Step 3
+ Step 4
+ Step 1
PRODUCING CARBON BLACK
Cancarb produces carbon black by cracking natural gas into its constituent elements – carbon and hydrogen – using 12 high temperature reactors. Carbon is extracted and sold, while the hydrogen gas, called reform gas, is used as a fuel to heat the reactors for the production cycle. The reactors reach temperatures over 1000 degrees celsius releasing hot exhaust gases that were formerly vented to the atmosphere.
+ Step 2
STEAM POWER
Exhausted gases from our carbon black process are now captured in our Waste Heat Recovery Facility, making use of this high energy source to produce steam that drives an electric generator. This super-efficient use of hot exhaust gases result in the production of power that displaces emissions from other fossil fuel power generating sources on the Alberta power grid.
+ Step 3
ELECTRICITY
The high-pressure, superheated steam is directed to a condensing steam turbine which generates electricity onto the City of Medicine Hat’s electrical grid. This turbine also allows for the extraction of medium-pressure steam for the Cancarb process, and low-pressure steam for the power plant.
+ Step 4
POWER TO THE PEOPLE
The power plant provides 30 MW of net power from waste heat to the City of Medicine Hat. The plant is designed to operate at full load, 24 hours per day, year-round, except for short periods of planned maintenance.
By generating electricity from an existing industrial waste product (in this case, heat), the Cancarb plant provides power to residents of the City of Medicine Hat
HARNESSING HEAT
Cancarb is committed to socially responsible business activities that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. One way this is achieved is through implementation of environmental best practices that help protect our environment from harm.
