NASA Astronaut visits Cancarb facility in Medicine Hat
Employees hear first hand how Cancarb product supports space exploration

Aug. 29, 2007 – Local Cancarb employees today had the opportunity to hear how Thermax® N991 Powder , the Carbon Black they manufacture, plays an important role in space exploration through a visit with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut Jerry L. Ross, (Colonel, USAF, RET.).

A veteran of seven space flights, Ross has over 1,393 hours in space including 58 hours and 18 minutes on nine EVAs (spacewalks). He was the first human to ever be launched into space seven times. Cancarb’s Carbon Black is used in the liner systems for the booster separation motors (BSMs) for Alliant Techsystems’ (NYSE: ATK) reusable solid rocket motors (RSRM) used on NASA’s space shuttles. RSRMs provide the necessary thrust to launch the shuttle. After the launch, the BSMs ignite to separate the RSRMs, which then land in the ocean for recovery.
“NASA and ATK wanted our employees to hear first hand how their products directly impact the shuttle launch and safety of the NASA astronauts in space,” said David Carmichael, President of Cancarb. “Colonel Ross’ shuttle mission experiences illustrate the importance of Cancarb products to the space shuttle program.”

The visit is part of NASA’s Space Flight Awareness (SFA) supplier motivation program, which offers supplier employees face-to face contact with the astronauts. Today’s visit was scheduled by ATK Launch Systems, the producer of the RSRM. It included a tour of the Cancarb facility and a presentation by Colonel Ross to employees and their families.

“Through this personal contact, the names now have faces,” said George Torres, ATK Launch Systems vice president of communications. “Cancarb employees have personally met the astronaut, and we hope they better understand how important their work is to flight safety and mission success.”
